The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barr. Nyesom Wike, has approved the construction of a new Divisional Police Station at the Wasa Informal Sector, ahead of the planned relocation of Apo mechanics and artisans to the area.
The approval was given on Tuesday at the 19th FCT Executive Council (EXCO) meeting following the presentation of a memo seeking the immediate provision of security infrastructure at the site, along side the renovation of 15 Hospitals in the territory.
The Director of FCTA Security Services Department, Adamu Gwari, while briefing newsmen the FCT Executive Council meeting on Tuesday said the project was a fresh contract with a six-month completion period.
Gwari said the approval followed a directive by Wike during the commissioning of infrastructure at the Wasa Informal Sector in July, when the need for enhanced security was raised in anticipation of the influx of artisans, mechanics and other businesses.
According to him, the new police station is expected to secure security for the informal sector and adjoining communities.
Gwari said, “The Minister directed that there should be a police station that will provide security not only for the sector, but for the entire area.
“This contract is a fresh contract which has been duly approved by the EXCO with a duration of a six-month delivery period."
He explained that the project was part of the FCT Administration’s security initiative aimed at bringing policing closer to residents, particularly at the grassroots and developing communities.
The initiative launched by Wike in December, provides for the construction of two divisional police stations in each of the six Area Councils of the FCT.
Giving an update on the programme, Gwari said construction work at several locations was at an advanced stage, while the FCTA Department of Public Buildings had already taken delivery of two completed and furnished police divisions.
He identified the completed facilities as the stations at Ushafa and Saburi.
“At the moment, Public Building has taken delivery of two fully completed police divisions: the one at Ushafa and the other one at Saburi,” he said.
Each facility comprises a fully furnished divisional police station and a furnished six-man staff quarters, Gwari added.
He assured residents that the FCT Administration remained committed to strengthening security by bringing police infrastructure closer to communities across the territory.
He also disclosed that the minister is expected to inspect some of the newly completed police facilities in the coming days.
