FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, has approved the immediate completion and equipping of the abandoned Utako General Hospital, alongside the comprehensive renovation and re-equipping of 14 other general hospitals across the Federal Capital Territory.
The FCT Administration will also procure modern medical equipment and upgrade infrastructure across the facilities as part of measures to strengthen healthcare delivery in the territory.
The Mandate Secretary, Health Services and Environment Secretariat (HSES), Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, disclosed this on Tuesday while briefing journalists at the end of the FCT Executive Council meeting in Abuja.
Fasawe said the council deliberated extensively on the state of the FCT health system, adding that the minister had ordered the immediate commencement of renovation, rehabilitation and upgrading of all general hospitals in the territory.
According to her, the intervention will involve a comprehensive overhaul of hospital infrastructure and the provision of modern medical equipment, including advanced diagnostic machines, X-ray equipment and surgical tools for operating theatres.
She confirmed that Wike had also directed the immediate resumption of work at the Utako General Hospital to ensure its completion, full equipping and staffing for operational use.
Fasawe also highlighted the administration’s healthcare financing efforts, noting that the FCT has consistently met its premium and capitation obligations to Health Maintenance Organisations (HMOs) under the health insurance scheme.
She said the combined intervention would ensure that upgraded facilities have the infrastructure, equipment and personnel required to provide quality, affordable and accessible healthcare to residents.
“When the hospitals are upgraded, the equipment are there, and the personnel are there, then quality, affordable, and accessible healthcare will be available for the people of the FCT,” she said.
The administration’s planned revamp of primary and secondary healthcare facilities across the six Area Councils is also expected to ease pressure on tertiary health institutions in the nation’s capital.
