The National Sports Commission (NSC) has disbursed about ₦300 million in quarterly training grants to 31 elite Nigerian athletes to boost preparations for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

The latest disbursement brings the total training grants paid to Nigerian elite athletes to over ₦1 billion since the initiative was introduced in 2025.

The resent disbursement  is the fifth payment under the quarterly grants policy and the third in 2026, implemented through the Commission’s Elite and Podium Board.

The scheme provides quarterly grants of $10,000, $5,000 and $3,000 to eligible athletes based on performance and scientific assessment indicators.

Director-General of the NSC, Hon. Bukola Olopade, said the initiative reflected the Federal Government’s commitment to athletes’ welfare and sustained investment in elite sports development.

Olopade said the grants were part of the key mandates given to the Commission’s leadership by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ensure athletes receive adequate financial support for international competitions.

He stressed that providing consistent funding would enable athletes to concentrate on training without financial distractions and improve Nigeria’s chances of winning medals at major global competitions.

“There are no accidental successes in sports. This is why the Commission has prioritised the welfare and wellbeing of our athletes as a critical part of our strategy for scientific podium success,” he said.

The NSC said the initiative was already contributing to improved performances by Nigerian athletes at international competitions, citing the country's outings at recent global sporting events.

It reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the elite sports development system and positioning Team Nigeria for podium success at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
