The Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Thursday 8, October 2026, became a hub of political activity as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu inaugurated the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council for his 2027 re-election bid.
The gathering brought together top government officials, party leaders, governors and political stakeholders in a display of party solidarity and mobilisation ahead of the presidential election scheduled for January 16, 2027.
However, beyond the political fanfare, Tinubu insisted that campaigning would not distract him from governance, stressing that Nigeria needed his attention more than ever amid pressing economic challenges.
“You have warned me not to allow the rigour of the campaign to distance me from governance. I hear you. I am in full agreement with your decision. Nigeria needs my attention now more than before, so the responsibility of this office does not stop,” the President said.
The president's remarks underscored the challenge of balancing the demands of a presidential campaign with the responsibilities of governing the country.
Tinubu urged members of the campaign council to take his administration’s policies, reforms and development initiatives to Nigerians as the APC prepares to seek another mandate.
The charge positioned the administration’s reform agenda at the centre of its re-election campaign, with the council expected to mobilise supporters and engage voters nationwide.
Similarly, for the ruling party, the inauguration marked a formal step towards consolidating its political machinery and coordinating efforts for the 2027 contest.
It also highlighted the administration’s task of sustaining public confidence in its policies while addressing concerns over their economic impact.
The political significance of the event was reflected in the presence of prominent figures, including Vice-President Kashim Shettima, First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker of the House of Representatives Abbas Tajudeen.
Hajiya Nana Shettima, wife of the Vice-President, was also among the dignitaries at the gathering.
Their presence, alongside governors and other party stakeholders, underscored the APC’s efforts to rally its leadership and consolidate support for Tinubu’s second-term ambition.
Beyond the show of political solidarity, however, the campaign council faces the task of translating its structure and mobilisation efforts into effective voter engagement across the country.
As the 2027 election approaches, Tinubu’s pledge that governance will continue uninterrupted places the administration’s performance and delivery of its promises at the heart of its re-election narrative.
Moreso, the APC Campaign Council faces the task of communicating the administration's record while responding to the concerns and expectations of Nigerians.
