The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), FCT Council, on Wednesday, 7 October, commenced a total and indefinite strike over unresolved labour issues such as promotion and other others affecting teachers in the Federal Capital Territory.
This was contained in a ommunique issued and signed by the NLC FCT Council Chairman, Comrade Knabayi Adako, on Wednesday in Abuja.
According to the communique, the strike action followed the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum issued to the FCT Administration (FCTA), with the NLC declaring the response from the administration inadequate and unacceptable
The union is demanding the removal of the vacancy precondition for the promotion of FCT teachers, arguing that teachers should be promoted as and when due rather than being subjected to vacancy-based promotion.
It is also demanding that eligible teachers from 2025 be allowed to sit for their promotion examination before or alongside the 2026 candidates.
Other demands include the withdrawal of redeployment and demotion letters issued to directors benefiting from the Harmonized Retirement Age for Teachers Act, 2022, as well as the reinstatement of affected management teams of the FCT State Education Board (SEB) and FCT Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB).
The NLC said the continued application of the vacancy condition had resulted in career stagnation, demoralization, and frustration among teachers.
The Council has directed all teachers across the public and private sectors in the FCT to stay withdrawn from their services until the issues are resolved, saying the strike would remain in force indefinitely.
It also called on affiliate unions to mobilize their members for total compliance, while urging the FCTA to address the grievances in the interest of industrial harmony and the education sector.
