FCTA Introduces Monthly Fitness Walk to Boost Staff Wellness, Productivity

By Joyce Remi-Babayeju

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has introduced a monthly fitness walk and staff engagement programme to promote employee wellness, strengthen workforce morale and improve service delivery.

The maiden exercise, led by the Acting Head of the FCT Civil Service, Nancy Sabanti Nathan, brought together management staff, labour union leaders and employees from various secretariats, departments and agencies across the territory.

Speaking at the event, Nathan said the initiative was designed to promote physical fitness, mental well-being and staff engagement while appreciating the contributions of the President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, to governance and development.

She explained that the programme would help sustain staff energy and commitment during the final quarter of the year, particularly as the administration intensifies efforts to deliver on its priorities in infrastructure, healthcare, education, transportation and sanitation.

"We are currently in the last quarter of the year, and we must remain proactive, stay energetic, and sustain our momentum," she said.

Nathan noted that the planned commissioning of major projects in December 2026 made it imperative for staff to remain committed to supporting the administration's development agenda.

She announced that the Education Secretariat would host the November 2026 edition of the monthly exercise.

According to her, the administration also plans to increase the walking distance from the initial three kilometres to five kilometres and beyond in subsequent editions.

She added that future sessions would feature medical check-ups, aerobics and cultural displays to broaden participation and promote a holistic approach to staff wellness.

Also speaking, the Acting Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Engineer Richard Yunana Dauda, commended the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention against preventable health challenges associated with sedentary office routines.

"When you have a workforce that is healthy, you achieve much more," Dauda said.

He stressed that physical fitness, mental well-being and emotional stability were essential to building a productive workforce capable of delivering quality public services.

The FCDA Lead  further disclosed that the authority and other secretariats had indicated interest in hosting subsequent editions of the programme.

In her remarks, the President of the Joint Unions Action Congress of FCTA/FCDA, Comrade Rifkatu Iortyer, applauded the administration for reviving the staff wellness programme.

She urged workers to participate more actively in future editions, noting that sustained involvement would help promote healthier lifestyles and strengthen unity among employees.

Iortyer, however, appealed to the administration to sustain its support for staff welfare, particularly in addressing concerns relating to accommodation and transportation.

The monthly fitness initiative is expected to provide a platform for promoting healthier lifestyles, strengthening collaboration among FCTA employees and improving workforce productivity.
