The Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Chapter, and the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Joint Campus Council (JCC), FCT Chapter, are calling for all parties to toe the path of dialogue for an immediate end to the ongoing teachers’ strike in the nation’s capital.
Reacting to the industrial action, the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), FCT Wing, expressed concern over the disruption of learning activities and its impact on students and parents across the territory.
ASUSS, while distancing itself from the strike, said industrial action should not be allowed to further disrupt learning in FCT schools, stressing the need for constructive engagement to resolve the issues responsible for the dispute.
The union called on the relevant authorities and stakeholders to prioritise dialogue and seek a workable solution that would protect teachers’ interests while ensuring that students return to their classrooms without further delay.
Also, NANS JCC FCT appealed to the NUT and the FCT Administration to resolve their differences through negotiation, warning that prolonged closure of schools could have serious consequences for students’ academic progress.
The students’ body urged the parties to place the interests of learners at the centre of their deliberations and explore all available avenues to restore normal academic activities.
The development amid growing concerns over the effect of the strike on teaching and learning across the FCT, with stakeholders calling for urgent steps to prevent further disruption.
ASUSS and NANS maintained that dialogue remains the most effective avenue for resolving the dispute, urging the parties to return to the negotiating table in the interest of teachers, students and the education system.
