The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees (BoT) has expressed solidarity with the FCT Minister, Barr. Nyesom Wike, urging him to remain steadfast and focused in his political engagements.
The BoT members conveyed the message on Tuesday evening when they visited Wike at his residence in Abuja to condole with him over the death of the party’s National Vice Chairman (South), Chief Dan Orbih.
The delegation, led by the BoT Chairman, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, comprised Senator Zainab Kure, former Minister of Sports, Hon. Damishi Sango, the BoT Secretary, Isah Dansidi, among others.
Speaking to journalists after the visit, Ohuabunwa said the delegation was drawn from the six geopolitical zones to represent the over 100 members of the BoT.
He said the visit was primarily to console Wike over the death of Orbih, whom he described as a committed party member, a pillar of the PDP and a close associate of the FCT Minister.
According to him, Orbih’s death was “shocking and painful,” noting that the late politician was also a member of the BoT and the party’s National Vice Chairman, South-South.
Ohuabunwa said the BoT also came to express solidarity with Wike and encourage him to remain focused.
“We are here to solidarize with him, encourage him, and ask him to remain focused because everything he’s been saying about the party is nothing but the truth,” he said.
The BoT chairman further said Wike had informed the PDP at all levels before accepting his appointment as FCT Minister and received the party’s support to serve in the Federal Government.
He said the BoT was proud of Wike’s capacity, performance and contribution to the party.
Responding, Wike thanked the BoT members for the condolence visit and reaffirmed his commitment to the PDP, saying he would continue to work with others to rebuild the party.
He described Orbih’s death as an irreparable loss, recalling the late politician’s role in his emergence as governor of Rivers State in 2015.
“God used Dan Orbih to make me a governor. He was the Chairman of PDP in Edo State at that time, and there was a crisis in Rivers State PDP. He chose to stand by the truth, and that’s how I became governor,” Wike said.
On the 2027 elections, the FCT Minister reiterated his support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election, while urging PDP members to concentrate on other elective positions.
Meanwhile, Wike reaffirmed his support for the re- election of Tinubu's in 2027.
“After supporting President Tinubu in 2023, it will be wrong of me to support another person to face him when he is seeking reelection,” Wike said.
He, however, maintained that his position should not stop the PDP from fielding candidates and contesting elections at the subnational levels.
