The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), in collaboration with the World Bank Group (WBG), has commenced an assessment of the implementation of the Emergency Preparedness and Response Plan (EPR&R) in Kogi State.
The assessment, which followed an earlier EPR&R workshop, is aimed at evaluating the state’s readiness to respond to emergencies, identifying existing response capacities and highlighting gaps requiring intervention.
Declaring the exercise open, the Head of NEMA Abuja Operations Office, Pharm. Zakari Abubakar, who represented the Director-General of NEMA, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to supporting states in building effective, coordinated and resilient emergency management structures.
Abubakar stressed the importance of continuous collaboration among stakeholders, noting that proactive preparedness, capacity building and effective coordination were critical to reducing the impact of disasters on communities.
NEMA said the partnership with the World Bank Group was aimed at strengthening disaster preparedness, improving coordination frameworks and promoting evidence-based planning for safer and more resilient communities across Nigeria.
The exercise brought together NEMA, the Nigerian Navy, NSCDC, the Nigerian Red Cross, KOSEMA, Kogi State Fire Service, NIWA and other relevant agencies.
Stakeholders reviewed existing emergency response mechanisms, assessed institutional capabilities and identified areas requiring further strengthening to improve operational effectiveness during emergencies.
