A car crash at a gas retail station in Liberty Junction, Kubwa, Abuja, sparked a fire  an early Sunday, injuring the driver and damaging at least nine nearby shops and a police traffic post.

The incident occurred at about 6:15am when the vehicle reportedly rammed into the gas station, sparking an inferno that quickly spread to adjoining shops and containers.

The vehicle was completely burnt in the ensuing fire, while the driver and a child were rescued from the scene. The injured driver was subsequently taken for medical attention, although details of his condition were not immediately available.

The blaze also damaged and displaced a makeshift police traffic post, while a section of a nearby drainage channel was torn open amid the debris.

Firefighters and emergency responders from the Federal Fire Service, FCT Fire Service, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Nigeria Police were deployed to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading further.

The incident caused severe traffic congestion along the busy corridor as commuters, motorists, motorcyclists and residents gathered around the scene.

Fire trucks occupied portions of the road as emergency personnel battled the flames and cleared debris from the affected area.

By the time the situation was brought under control, the affected vehicle had been reduced to a burnt-out shell, while several shops and the police post had sustained damage.

NewsGrid reports that normalcy was gradually returning to the area as emergency responders concluded operations and left the scene.
